Competency H

H. demonstrate proficiency in identifying, using, and evaluating current and emerging information and communication technologies;

Explication:

Many of the most useful things I have learned in the SLIS program involve exploring and learning to use various social media technologies. Some, such as Second Life, were introduced in LIBR 203. Most assignments in LIBR 203 were to provide hands on experience with various kinds of social networking tools in order to be able to use them in the various classes. In LIBR 233 and 285 we had short group assignments where each team member identified a type of technology, researched it, shared and compared it, and then presented a Power Point on Elluminate to share our findings with the rest of the class. We had the chance to see other students present projects made with Animoto, allowing the making of short videos, or other kinds of presentation software. We did work as a group via Skype, Blackboard instant messaging, wikispaces, and virtual rooms on the class website.

We evaluated various kinds of social media tools. For example, I see the potential for Second Life for applications such as creating a virtual library, but I don’t particularly enjoy using it. Elluminate or Collaborate has been essential to progress in a virtual academic program. I have used sessions to see presentations by professors and colleagues and to plan out presentations with groups using the whiteboard feature.

I learned to use a video camera to film my own story telling presentations in LIBR 281 Contemporary Issues: Storytelling as well as my book talks and reading to elementary school children at my internship at Ocean View Elementary School. During that internship I also learned to read aloud with a lavaliere microphone.  I learned to download the video to my computer, review it, and upload it to a site such as youtube.com. I still need to learn to edit video.

Several classes assigned us to work in groups, comparing and contrasting various forms of social media. In one group, we compared media to construct short video presentations on line, including Jing and Animoto.

I constructed my own literary blog in my Tween literature class, LIBR 264, and continue to add to my reviews. It also contains reflections and short essays by me atwww.klevenson.wordpress.com. It demonstrates my ability to construct new postings and pages, add tags, and categorize my book entries by genre on a Word Press website.

I chose as an artifact the PowerPoint presentation from an Elluminate session that I presented with a group to my LIBR 233 Library Media Center class. I also learned to use the Apple version of PowerPoint and taught fifth graders to use it at Ocean View Elementary School.

Artifacts

 In LIBR 233 I worked with a group to create a PowerPoint presentation and present it to the class on Elluminate. We each chose a technological tool to make short video presentations and then compared them. I researched Jing (see Social Media Tools, slides 1-4, 13-18). Jing allows you to capture what you see on your computer screen and to easily upload it to a website and post it. As a group, we developed a rubric for the technologies we explored. I presented uses for Jing as a librarian, as a student, and as an instructor. It shows my competency in “identifying, using, and evaluating current and emerging information and communication technologies.”

I chose a storytelling presentation, a retelling of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwS2qJ5Sxgs. I recorded myself telling the story with a hand-held video camera, uploaded the presentation to my computer, and then uploaded it to YouTube for LIBR 281, my Storytelling class with Beth Wrenn-Estes. This project demonstrates my ability to use a video camera, download the material to my computer, and upload it to YouTube. It also demonstrates adding tags to the resulting presentation.

For my third artifact, I chose my literary blog at www.klevenson.wordpress.com. I started it as an assignment for my tween literature class, LIBR 264, but I found I enjoyed writing book and movie reviews and have continued to add to it. I linked it to my Facebook page and several of my friends and other librarians follow my new entries. This demonstrates my ability to use two forms of social media together: Word Press and Facebook and to use tags to enable readers to find postings of interest.

Conclusion

Social media technology is constantly changing. Librarians will need to keep up with the changes and be constantly on the lookout for ways they can use social media to promote their library collections and present information. I have seen library websites with virtual reference librarians, on line homework help, book talks (written and videotaped) by librarians and peers (such as other teenagers). We use the website to check the catalog, reserve books, and pay fines on overdue books. I am sure many more ways to use the internet and social media tools are coming our way.
