Conclusion

I have enjoyed my Library and Information Sciences classes more than I can say. I have experienced a wide range of teaching methods and professional personalities. I wish I might have taken more classes with more professors, but the Teacher Librarian program only allows for two electives. At the onset of my course of studies, I debated whether to focus on an archival, reference or Teacher Librarian pathway. I am glad that I chose Teacher Librarian.

I started the MLIS in January 2010. I had taken a hiatus from teaching in 2008 after an injury in the classroom left me in too much discomfort to concentrate on teaching middle school children. I explored other job possibilities in the midst of the economic downturn. Finally, I decided to return to university to learn more about research and the mechanics of librarianship. Of course, I soon found librarianship had many more facets than promoting a love of books. From the nine year old who cataloged all her personal books on 3 by 5 cards, to a researcher who volunteered at several different varieties of libraries, to an intern at a high school and an elementary school library, to a Teacher Librarian looking for full time placement, I have enjoyed the journey.

I came into the program with the strengths of patience and an ability to teach subject matter clearly. I always have been organized and punctual. I thank my supervisor at my present government job for allowing me to adjust my schedule to accommodate my internships. I also thank the providers of my scholarships and fellowships for their support: P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) for believing in me and granting me a scholarship to return to university, San Jose State for the Graduate Equity Fellowship, and ACL (Association of Children’s Libraries) for awarding me a one-year membership and fees for their annual Institute.

I complete the SLIS program with a wealth of tools to further hone and use in a new career as a Teacher Librarian. I started looking for a placement during my internships. My mentor librarians kindly introduced me to colleagues who were looking for replacements as they prepared to retire. My previous management positions contribute to my understanding of library management. I would prefer to manage a high school library, but I will fit into the library world wherever I can obtain a full time position.
